Self-described as “math pop”, DazGak!’s sound is fuelled with a biting metallic hardcore punk energy combined with the soaring melodicism and catchiness found in emo and pop-punk. Newcomers to the Irish band may be surprised to learn that this is their first release to feature vocals. “I always looked and hoped we’d get a vocalist but it wasn’t happening, so at one show out of frustration I stepped up and just tried the harsh vocals and didn’t tell anybody I was going to do it,” reminisces guitarist and now vocalist Jackson Weed in their latest interview (which you can read in full at All The Cores). This glow-up and evolution of their sound was also aided by the addition of fellow Cork musician Jake O’Driscoll (who also plays in God Alone); the missing cog to complete DazGak!’s core. “It’s so apparent at the shows how much response we get from the vocals. It adds this human layer and the crowd responds, gets rowdier, and enjoys the show more,” adds Weed. Their intense and sweaty live performances took them on a headlining tour this month across various small venues around Ireland and the UK, kicking off with a particularly hi-octane stop off in Berlin.
Stimpy is a special release for many reasons. Not only is it DazGak!’s first set of songs with vocals and as a quartet, but also their first time collaborating with a label. Stimpy has been championed by Floodlit Recordings, a relatively new record label venture for Joe Clayton – guitarist of elegant, heavy post-rock ensemble Pijn, plus sought after producer, engineer and head honcho at No Studio in Manchester – a man who must never sleep! DazGak! recorded Stimpy mostly at Kitten Lane Studios in Cork, partly at Cork School Of Music, and partly at home. But it was hiring Joe Clayton to oversee the final mix and master of Stimpy that really brought the record to life. “Joe in a lot of ways saved our record,” confirms Weed; “we had a difficult time recording it and had multiple setbacks. Joe managed to work with all of it and made the record sound massive.” And for those living in mainland Europe, you can grab a CD from legendary Dutch hardcore label Smithsfoodgroup DIY, (who put out early EP releases from Svalbard and Employed To Serve) who have come out of hibernation for this special occasion. Critics have been enjoying early press promos, and now it’s your turn to dig in.
