“‘Big in Tucson’ comes from someone from Tucson who commented on a YouTube video of ours years ago and said how they like our music and skate to it. So we joke that we are big in Tucson,” reveals DazGak! guitarist Jackson Weed. This comes as no surprise, as Tucson, Arizona has a rich punk history going back to the late 1970s. In particular, beloved alcohol-free venue The DPC (Downtown Performance Centre) was praised for their all ages shows, giving early platforms to punk bands including Bad Religion, The Offspring, Green Day and more. Tucson is also the birthplace of Greg Ginn, founder of hardcore punk legends Black Flag and influential indie rock label SST – putting out records by Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Minutemen, Husker Du, Meat Puppets, Soundgarden and countless more revered bands. Other musician residents from Tucson include Linda McCartney, Duane Eddy, Linda Ronstadt, Bog Log III, Raymond Pettibon and the band Calexico.

But we all know that Tucson, Arizona is most famous – nay, notorious – as being the setting of the cult 1995 Sega-CD video game Desert Bus. The game was presented by comedic magician duo Penn & Teller, and was considered to be so difficult that it was never released into stores – later finding its way onto the internet and bootleg market. Desert Bus has the player drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada; a 360 mile journey capped at 45mph, meaning the game takes at least 8 hours in real time just to complete the first level. The journey ahead of you takes place on a straight road with no other vehicles or obstacles. Desert Bus demands ultimate endurance and concentration, because if you happen to fall asleep, crash or breakdown, you have to wait to get towed all the way back to Tucson – in real time! To top it off, there isn’t even a pause button. The game manual has one explanation from Penn & Teller: “Does your life have a pause button!?” And what happens when you do reach Las Vegas? You earn 1 point. And then you have to drive all the way back to Tucson on another 8 hour trip. So if you are going to play some Desert Bus and attempt the high score, make sure you load up your journey with Stimpy and the entire DazGak! discography, because you’re gonna need it!
