My old band. This was a very stressful press campaign that worked me to the bone as I doubled my workload by acting as PR and band leader – I basically ended up organising almost every aspect of this record release. Considering Agvirre made lengthy, experimental songs that fused post-black metal with violin, synths and post-rock, plus we had a weird unpronounceable name, and it was our very first release, and we hadn’t played a show yet – I’m still flabbergasted at how positively and widely this little record was covered. I’ll always have a fondness for the small discography we made together.
ACCOLADES
“The resulting whirlpool of rage and confusion amply mirrors the sense of inner torment and isolation that mental illness is associated with.”
~ The Wire
“Over the course of two lengthy pieces, the band weave a chaotic yet strangely beautiful wall of noise, with their anxious blend of black metal and post rock”
~ The Quietus
“A true melting pot of influences, ideas and vision, combined with skill and a fearless disregard for convention, this EP is a powerful statement.”
~ Astral Noize
FROM THE PRESS KIT
SILENCE is an intense and chaotic insight into the struggles of living with mental illness, told through their lengthy songs that encompass elements of black metal, shoegaze, post-metal, noise and electronic music. Agvirre perform raging blackened riffs enhanced with soaring strings and haunting synths, with experimental flourishes as well as a keen ear for strong melodies. Lyrically the album explores cathartic and personal themes surrounding anxiety, depression, grief, loss, abuse and self-worth. Agvirre went as far to interview people about their own struggles with mental illness, with their responses being used as spoken word samples that embellish these recordings. SILENCE stands as a deeply emotional journey that ebbs and flows through both ferocious and dreamy passages. Epic, atmospheric and heartfelt.
Released January 24th 2020 on CD, Cassette and Digital by Trepanation Recordings and Surviving Sounds.
